"In 2013, my wife - then girlfriend - and I went to Marrakech. It was our first trip together. Neither one of us had been there before. It was lovely. Vibrant, colorful, noisy, but not overly intrusive. Approaching Jemaa el-Fna, waves of beating percussion and undulating singing greeted us from a distance. Stalls, people, cars, scooters, everything is happening all the time. Timbrally the music they were playing was very different from Egyptian or Arab music, probably owing to the Amazigh influence. Exactly a year later, we returned for our honeymoon and this time, having splurged for checked luggage, I bought a round, small, tourist-trap version of a Gimbri. It took me six years to finally sit down and make something with it. This piece is it. All the sounds used to make this started as recordings of the gimbri plucked, picked, played percussively, bowed like a Rebab, granulated, stretched, and mangled to create this collage of sounds.

While the piece has a finite length, the best way to approach listening to it would be by forgoing ideas of linearity and sections. The sounds appear, interact, and fade away. They do not do so as a result of their predecessors’ actions and have no intentions of affecting what happens next.
